walking down the calm, friendly streets of westbrook always made her feel better. no matter what happened, bad or good, she would take a walk around town just after it. sometimes she would bring a friend along with her, but usually she was just alone.
quinn abel's hair was slightly messy, and her eyes were brighter and more clear than usual. her mare had been extra cooperative and hard-working today, and it had made the teen happy and excited. she heard there was a show coming up, but she didn't think she would compete. maybe she would, but it was highly unlikely that she would win or even hit third place. fourth or fifth was good enough for her, just being in the competition was an honor in her book.
yawning, she walked into starbucks, the chimes on the door singing a friendly welcome song. she smiled at the people drinking coffee at some of the tables. it reminded her of how her father used to sit at the kitchen table, reading the newspaper and drinking his coffee. she had always nagged him about being slow and being the last one to finish breakfast. the girl smiled at the thought and walked up to the line, her hand in her jeans pockets.
after a few minutes it was her turn to order. she stepped up to the counter, narrowing her eyes at the menu. "one vanilla bean frappuccino with whipped cream, please," she asked, giving the young man at the counter a small smile and handing over a five-dollar bill. she received her change and went to sit down at one of the recently polished tables, drumming her fingers on the surface. the scent of cocoa and coffee wafted through the shop as a few people behind the counter hurriedly made cups of coffee for tired customers. it was 7:00 am, which was considerably late for her. for others, it was probably still early morning.
