Katniss Rogge walked into the indoor arena, leading Night behind her. Night threw his head up in annoyance, not wanting to jump today. Katniss whispered to him, "Oh calm down, boy." She giggled and put her helmet on. Before she climbed up onto Night, she checked the girth one last time. Once she reajusted it, she put her left leg into the stirrup, throwing her right leg over Night. She sat comfortably in the saddle for a seond, then gathered her reigns and began to walk him on the rail. Katniss smiled, breathing in the fresh air that she longed to have for the past couple of days. She still had a black eye, but it was going away. It was unattractive looking, and Katniss tried to cover it up with makeup. She only cried, making the makeup smear and come off.
Katniss pushed Night into a canter then, after warming up. He kept a nice pace as they came up to the first jump, only a small one. Katniss counted the strides, then gave him the que to jump. They went over it perfectly, landing gracefully. "Good boy," Katniss whispered, patting Night's black neck. She giggled and steered him to the next jump, a larger one. Night whinnied, wanting to refure. Katniss knew what to do when he did this, though. She simply pushed him on, and qued him to jump. A rail hit the ground, making Katniss sigh. "It's alright, boy," she said, not wanting to get upset over a rail hitting the ground. "We can try it again!" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "Break, really?" Phoebe snapped her hand down, bringing the chain lead over the pony's nose. The pony had just spun her little head around and nipped the teen in the back of her leg. It didn't cause any pain, but all of Break's little 'issues' were starting to get really annoying, really quick. The nipping, the stall door kicking, the head tossing, this pony was going to be harder to get rid of than Phoebe thought.
Phoebe hooked the mare up to the crossties just a few steps away from her stall. The blond turned to the sawhorse beside her, and gazed at her previously placed tack. She pulled the white half pad out from underneath her Tad Coffin saddle and placed it on Break's back, pulling it up so it was over her withers. She then unclipped one crosstie at a time to throw a martingale over the bay mare's head. It was little big, she'd probably grabbed Tommy's by mistake. Oh well, it'll do for one ride. Now Phoebe set her saddle on the pony, and grabbed her girth. She slid the girth through the loop of a martingale and started to tighten it.
OW! That brat! Phoebe swung around and slapped the pony as hard as she could on her neck. "No!" She said clearly, waving a finger in the pony's face, which had jolted upright after the slap.
Keeping a close eye on Break's muzzle, she continued tightening the girth. Finally it was up to its normal hole. Phoebe unsnapped the crossties, threw her reins over Break's ears and slid the full cheek snaffle into her mouth. For once, Break didn't seal her lips. She accepted it with a sense of urgency, it seemed. Phoebe leaned over to put her hair into a hairnet before setting her Charles Owen on her head. Afterwards, she grabbed the pony's reins and walked in front of her, leading her toward the indoor ring.
She really hoped no one was there. If Break decided to be a brat and throw her off, she would do it in front of the biggest crowd possible. That seemed to be the way this green pony rolled.
But of course, another girl was in there, atop a- no, was that a stallion? Was competing with a stallion legal as a minor? Surely that girl wasn't over eighteen. Phoebe knew Break wouldn't mind, she wasn't in season, but the sight of seeing a girl riding a stallion just puzzled her.
Phoebe waited until the girl cleared got over the jump until calling "Gate!" She opened it with short, choppy motions, making sure it didn't swing in toward the rider and horse. Phoebe shut the gate and mounted Break from a small block in the corner of the ring. She could probably do it from the ground, but that wasn't something to test with eyes watching her. Phoebe didn't recognize her from their previous lesson. Probably wasn't allowed in the ring with a bunch of mares. The blond rolled her ankles and let her pony wander away from the other pair. She let Break walk for a few minutes before asking for a smooth trot. Not quite collected, just a normal large pony trot.
The pair trotted casually for a few minutes before Phoebe asked the pony to get into a frame. It took a few seconds of convincing, but Break finally put her head down a little. Without missing a beat, Phoebe tossed her stirrups over the pommel of her Tad Coffin and continued posting without them. At her previous school, they weren't allowed stirrups on the flat, so she could easily do this for thirty minutes straight. Her leg was completely solid.
Phoebe paid no more attention to the stallion and the girl as she worked her way across the ring nd back, doing serpentines and spirals.

Katniss noticed the girl walk in with a pony, a cute pony. She giggled, but kept her focus on Night, who was currently trotting in circles, getting near the middle of the arena. Once they reached the middle, Katniss pushed him into a canter, fixing his lead. She then went up to the jump they had failed to go over smoothly before. This time, she really focused on the strides, making sure Night didn't take any extra strides. When she qued him to jump, he quickly stopped, throwing his head down to get Katniss off his back. Katniss threw her arms around his neck, refusing to be left in the dust. Her feet fell out of the stirrups, and she almost flipped over Night. Quickly, though, she pushed herself up and got her feet back in the stirrups and gathered her reigns.
She wasn't going to yell at him, like any other rider would. She simple said, "Easy boy. Calm down." Night hated being yelled at, and that only made him more agitated and nervous. Katniss wasn't one to yell either. She didn't have a crop with her, only spurs. Lightly, she poked him with them. Night went back into a canter, a little bumpy one with long strides. Katniss collected him and steered him towards the rail, making sure the other girl had enough space. Katniss passed her, her curly hair bouncing on her back. She balanced herself in the saddle as they approached the jump one last time.
Katniss blinked away the water that came to her black eye. That always bothered her, how the bruised eye caused it to water all the time, making it hard for Katniss to see. She blinked it away one last time before queing Night. He leaped over it funnily. Katniss lost her balance slightly, one foot coming out of the stirrup. She regained her balance, though, another close call.
What was with her? She couldnt' seem to get her head in the game. She knew her trainers would be dissapointed in her if they saw her like this. They didn't get the 40K for Katniss just watch her fail. Katniss couldn't fail them. She moved into the middle of the arena, patting Night absentmindedly. "Don't worry boy," she whispered in her sweet voice, "we can do this." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Phoebe tossed her stirrups back into their appropriate position. She wanted to focus on lead changes for a little while, and if Break decided to throw a buck in their, there would be nothing holding Phoebe's skinny butt in the tack.
It wouldn't matter though, this other horse was clearly being a pain in the arse. Break seemed like an angel right now, only Phoebe could feel that she was heavy on her forehand. Phoebe wondered why the girl didn't punish the stallion. The girl herself did a decent job, and the horse just flat out refused. Phoebe would be on that horse's hind end. If she didn't the issue wouldn't be fixed. Speaking of issues..
Phoebe asked for a canter on a long side and the pony stepped right into one without quickening her trot strides beforehand. It was a good transition. Phoebe took the next diagonal across the ring and let Break gain speed as they went toward the corner. The blond asked for a change in the corner, making sure she didn't overdo her hands. The pony switched, but then switched her back legs to the prior lead. Break stuck her head down and took a huge buck before trying to take off. Phoebe pulled the pony to a halt using a one handed stop and used her hand to slap her behind the saddle. Break threw her head up, then calmed. Phoebe asked for a canter again, and this time they did an exquisite change.
Break nickered at the stallion as if she had just noticed him. Phoebe rolled her eyes and gazed at the ring, trying to spot the perfect warm up jump. There! A vertical, about 2'3" was set up just off the rail over by where the other girl was standing with her horse. Phoebe kept Break at a smooth canter as they rounded the corner toward the jump. Break didn't change anything about her speed even as she got closer to the jump. One, two.. Phoebe counted, then rose out of the tack just as Break snapped her knees into their customary position. Phoebe kept her elbows in, eyes up, and heels down. Picture perfect form, her old trainer would say. They landed calmly and the girl pulled her pony back to a walk.

Katniss watched the girl as she hit her pony behind the saddle. She then watched as they came up towards the jump they were at. She quickly backed up so the girl wouldn't collide with her. Katniss looked down at Night and rolled her eyes. She would never hit Night like that, mostly because it would just make him more agitated and frustrated. Katniss never hit a horse in her life. To her, it was like hitting a child. You just couldn't do it. Night whinnied to the pony, throwing his head up then. Katniss pulled back on the reigns so he would get back into concentration.
Pushing Night into a canter again, she rounded the arena once before going for the jump. She kept her body relaxed instead of tensed. Elbows up and heels down, she qued Night to leap over the jump. Finally, they made it over it without a problem. A smile grew onto Katniss' face and she pulled Night to a walk. "Good boy, that was awesome!" She said to Night, patting his neck. All it took was just some extra patience and not getting angry, unlike the other girl. Katniss wanted to give her some tips on what to do instead of hitting her pony, but she didn't. Katniss didn't want to make enemies on her first day. She simply kept to herself.
Katniss walked passed the girl, nodding. Only a nod, not an actualy greeting. It was better for her to keep her mouth shut so she wouldn't say anything to make her mad. After she nodded, she kept her head down so the girl wouldn't see her black eye. Katniss didn't want to tell her all about how she was abused, and this girl didn't even need to know. Night tried to go into a trot when he felt Katniss tense up. She pulled him back, keeping him at a steady walk. After going around the arena a few times at a walk, she pushed him into a trot, practicing some diagnol changes. She rode to the left, then switched to the right, looking down to make sure she had the right diagnol. Smiling, Katniss went into a canter, practicing some lead changes then. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Phoebe smiled as the girl got her horse over the jump. Sure, she was competitive, and didn't lead much of a social life, but she was always happy when riders got past an obstacle and she was there for it. The problem at hand would've been solved a lot quicker if she would've given the stallion a sharp tap the first time, but they were over it now, and that was good.
Phoebe thought about it. She had been raised with punishing the horse if it was the horse's fault. They never tried to do it again, or within that week or so. It took three tries for this girl with her methods, and two for Phoebe and her own. They just worked for this blond, and mostly everyone else she'd ever met. Horses that were spoiled with affection and that never faced consequences were used to their pushover of a rider. Break's previous short stirrup rider was like that, and look where Break was now. Back in training.
When the other girl walked by, acknowledging Phoebe with a sharp nod, the blond replied with a few quick nods, more of a nice job, or that was decent, than anything else.
Phoebe asked for a canter again and looked at the jump that the other girl had had difficulties with. She wasn't going to it now, so Phoebe figured she could. The pair cantered across the diagonal toward the jump, only about 2'6", but it had a few bright looking colors on it. Break wasn't the one who cared about bright colors. That was Fiona. That mare was a complete scaredy cat. Phoebe didn't plan on bringing her into the Jumper Ring at all. Ever. She was only to be in the Hunter ring because of her completely uncalled for and inconsistent spooking.
Anyway, as they got closer, Phoebe could feel the pony's weight shifting, almost as if she was going to try to flip a lead before the jump. That would result in a rather uncomfortable cross canter. Yuck. Phoebe leaned awkwardly off to the left, preventing the pony from switching leads and snapped into two point just as Break went up. The jump was flawless except for the take off.
Phoebe wondered if the girl knew who she was. Not to be arrogant, or snobby, but tons of people did. Either from trash mags or showing, everyone here already knew her name.

Katniss watched silently as the girl went over the jump, with just a complication with the take off. She prepared herself to watch her hit the pony. The girl looked a little familiar, now that she had a good look at her. Wait, was that Phoebe Jones? No, it couldn't be. Katniss wanted to know, but she felt too shy to go over and talk to the girl. She figured that if that was the Phoebe Jones, she would go up and introduce herself. Katniss kicked Night to a trot, coming up to a 3 ft. jump. Night decided to throw his head once again before leaping over the jump. Katniss' hands went fowards, making her come out of the saddle slightly. When he landed, Katniss was hanging onto his neck, clinging so she wouldn't fall off. Night, getting annoyed with her, threw his head down, throwing Katniss to the ground.
Night whinnied loudly, bolting away from Katniss and bucking around the arena like a mad horse. She quickly gathered her wits and stood up, getting ready to chase after the stallion. He flew past the girl, bucking and whinnying. Katniss went after him, her spurs clicking against her boots as they fell off. She tripped over her feet, but still went after her horse. Night flew past her and she waved her arms in the air to get him to stop. "Whoa, Night! Whoaa!" It didn't work, for he flew past her and towards the girl. Thankfully, he dodged them and stopped his mad running in the middle of the arena.
Katniss grabbed his reigns and shook her finger in his face, saying, "No." She said it firmly, not yelling. She then walked over to the girl and said, "I'm so sorry. He's kinda a handful. I hope he didn't spook your horse at all!" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Oh no, trotting to a 3' jump even on a taller horse like that was usually trouble. That theory was proved correct as the girl came tumbling over the black horse's shoulder. Loose stallion. Oh god. Phoebe dismounted but kept Break close by her side, never letting the pony take a step out of line. Phoebe collected the girl's spurs and watched in horror as she waved her arms about.
"No offense, but that's one why to not get your horse to calm down." Phoebe commented. She didn't have a rude or sarcastic tone, simply informative. "Do you have a martingale on him? If not, it'd probably help." She said with a smile before offering the girl's spurs back to her. Break reached out her nose to the stallion's, but Phoebe jerked her back. No ideas for her little mare.
"Break? Spook? Ha, no." Phoebe paused. "Any of my other brutes would've. Break only acts stupid when there's no reason to."
"I'm Phoebe. Phoebe Jones." Now was when she would figure out where this girl got her info. The results, or the magazines.

Katniss smiled weakly. She didn't really have the money to get fancy things for Night like other people could. She ignored the question and said, "The Phoebe Jones? Well, I'm Katniss Rogge. It's really nice to meet you." Night nudged her, actually wanting to get back to jumping. Katniss gave him a stern look, then looked back at Phoebe. "Again, I'm really sorry!" She put her foot into the stirrup and pulled herself up. Night nickered sofly when he felt her weight on his back. He backed up slightly as Katniss gathered her reigns and gained balance. Her bouncy dark brown hair covered her face again, her skinny little self looking so small on the stallion.
She felt worry wash over her, her black eye clearly visible. What would she tell her? That Night kicked her? It was sort of believable, but a kick to the face by a horse would leave a bigger mark then just a simple black eye. Katniss knew a girl that got kicked in the face, and her black eye made her eye swell shut. Katniss couldn't lie, either. She always got so nervous when she tried to. Night turned his head, his ears perking up when he heard birds flying over by them. He wasn't much of a fan of birds. Katniss patted his neck and said, "Oh, you're alright, boy." She giggled, then looked back up at Phoebe. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "Katniss. Martingale?" Phoebe had never heard of a hunter, jumper, or Eq rider that hadn't had a martingale on their horse at some point and time. "If you left yours at wherever you lived before, I have an extra one. It was my old show martingale, so its used, but in shape." Phoebe had the confidence to talk to her. She was just a confident person. She didn't like to talk, that was different than not wanting to talk.
As Katniss mounted her horse, she caught a quick glimpse of what seemed to be a black eye. Phoebe ignored it. If this stranger wanted to tell her life story, than she could gush right on, but Phoebe wasn't interested in becoming 'BFFs' with anyone. She was hear to ride.
Phoebe used the roll top beside her to mount Break, letting her walk around again. The girl asked for a canter with an almost unnoticeable cue and they were off at a smooth canter. The blond cantered toward a 2'9" line and jumped both with astonishing ease. This was a good day for Break.
